The Centre for Community Development and Action CCDA earlier known as Gram Mahila Kendra is an Extension and Demonstration unit of Department. The CCDA continuously striving to build empowered and resilient communities to address their basic amenities related needs through participatory approach.

It’s present area of work in Burari, Timarpur, Chandrawal Village and Indira Vikas Basti, Outram line. Dr. Sudhir Maske, Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Work took over the charge as the Honorary Director in the year June 2023. In the year 2021-22, the activities at the community through CCDA were suspended due to the onset of the pandemic. The Centre is kept alive at the community-Ajit Vihar in Burari through the community members, who had been participating in the activities run by the CCDA in the pre-pandemic times. There is regular chain of communication maintained by the department with the community representatives. Recently the new office of CCDA has been set up in the administrative block of DSSW campus. At present there are five students of social work have been placed for their concurrent fieldwork.

Activities

Balwadi

The Balwadi program strives to provide formal and informal education to the underprivileged children of the community. The strength of the class is 20. Moral lesson through usage of multimedia, storytelling, recitation, art and craft sessions, activity based learning is used as a methodology of teaching. Dance therapy and physical fitness through sports day was organized for the children.

Women Group

Women of the community who are largely involved in unorganized sector are brought together through group meetings and discussion on the topic of women safety, domestic violence, health and hygiene etc.

Menstrual Health and Hygiene

This year the focus of the work in the community was menstrual health and hygiene of young girls and women. The adolescent girls and women of the community were engaged in demonstrative group discussion pertaining to the healthy and hygienic habits to be followed during the period. Visit to Goonj NGO and understanding their project “Not just a piece of cloth” helped to impart knowledge of making environment friendly cloth sanitary pads to the women. Collaboration with the social workers of Aditi College was established who were working on the same cause. Similar session was also conducted with the young girls of class 6-8th in D.V Tyagi School Burari about menstrual health and hygiene

Adolescent Girl’s Group

The group was involved in co-curricular, recreational activities, discussions and meetings. Career guidance and counselling was also provided to the girls related to educational and job opportunities. Two girls were helped get admission in IT course and jobs.

Diwali Mela

Adolescent girls from the community were encouraged to put up their own stall of decorative products in the Diwali Mela organized in Department of Social Work. This helped them develop enterprising spirit and boost confidence. The profit earned from the sale was utilized for buying stationery for the Balwadi.

Gandhi Jayanti

On the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi a cultural event was organized which cherished the values and principles of non-violence and truth. MLA of Burari Mr Sanjeev Jha was invited to the event which saw a turnover of about 100 people. Cultural events like group dance, songs, poem recitation art competition was conducted.

School Admission

Parents and children were counselled about enrolment in formal institutes of education. They were also guided with the education process and helped with getting required documents.

Cleanliness of the Community

Need assessment was done regarding clean surroundings and MCD workers and their regularity was assessed. Clogged drains and lack of regular cleanliness as an issue was taken up and letters were written with the help of Pradhan of Ajeet Vihar, other elderly members of the community and girl’s group. An online complaint was filed using single point complaint lodging system and grievance was registered at the number 155304, to ensure safe surroundings.

International Women’s Day (IWD)

The IWD is celebrated with great zeal in the area since last five years. However, this time it has been postponed due to spread of the pandemic corona virus. Nevertheless, the children were prepared for the programme around the theme of women empowerment and women issues.

Organization of Events

Apart from the above events which were celebrated at a larger scale, several other important days like Teacher’s Day, Republic day, Independence Day etc were celebrated imparting information; spreading awareness and conducting activities with the residents of the community. CCDA also contributed in the organization of Saraswati Puja, a major festival celebrated in Ajit Vihar.

Financial Support and Laptop Donation to Needy Students

The Scholarship Event held today at the Department of Social Work (DSSW), University of Delhi, was a resounding success in providing support to deserving students. The event, organized in collaboration with Mr. Dinesh Rajoria, an esteemed alumnus of DSSW from Power Grid Corporation Haryana, and the Centre for Community Development and Action (CCDA), witnessed the generous donation of a brand-new Lenovo laptop to Ms. Shivkumari (PWD) student and subsequent cheques of 5100/- each to Mr. Vineet Singhaniya and Mr. Khubhchand ( M.A Social Work) Final Year Student.

Innovative Teaching Methods

Carrer Guidance Programme for Community Youths

The CCDA has recently launched Carrer Guidance Programme for community youths. The centre is actively working in four communities in the periphery Delhi University North Campus. The Trainee student social workers actively working with Youths residing in slum communities, particularly they are understanding the career aspirations of students studying in 10th and 12th standard and according providing them inputs to choose the best options for their further studies and career. Based on their interest and needs the inputs are being provided through counselling and mentorship support. The training and workshops are also being organized for the awareness purposes. The trainee social workers also helping the students who are apply for PG CUCET-2024.
